The difference between brown paper bags and kraft bags mainly comes down to terminology, material, and performance. Brown paper bags usually describe the colour and appearance of the bag, referring to its natural brown look, while kraft bags refer to the type of paper used, made through the kraft process that produces stronger and more durable fibres. In most cases, brown paper bags are actually made from kraft paper, which is why the terms are often used interchangeably. However, kraft paper specifically highlights strength, tear resistance, and durability, making it ideal for carrying heavier items and retail use. Brown paper bags, being unbleached, also give a more natural and eco-friendly appearance, often associated with sustainability and low-cost packaging. In simple terms, all brown paper bags can be kraft, but not all kraft bags are just “brown,” as kraft paper can also be white, black, or recycled variations.
