What Does Love Entail?

Ever get the feeling that despite the vast sea of social connections online, we're actually swimming in a pool of loneliness? In her piece, "Lonely Planet: isolation increases in us," Johannah Cornblatt points out that even with over 300 million people in the United States, loneliness seems to be on the rise.

Mother Teresa once remarked, "Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty," and she went on to say that the antidote to loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love.

Dr. Sue Johnson, the brains behind Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, dives into the intricacies of love in her article, "What You Need to Know about Love." She emphasizes that the fundamental need we have as children, the desire to call out to someone special and receive reassurance, persists throughout our lives. To feel loved becomes our sanctuary, a longing hardwired into our brains from cradle to grave.

The core desire for emotional connection, the assurance that your loved one will stand by you during tough times, is a primal yearning. Yet, expressing these needs for love, appreciation, and support often becomes a stumbling block for couples.

Opening up about our deepest feelings can be daunting, especially when vulnerability triggers fears of rejection or being unlovable. In these moments, fear takes the reins, leaving couples feeling terrified.

These fears act as barriers, preventing partners from tapping into their softer feelings of hurt and sadness. Instead of expressing vulnerability, they may resort to anger, lashing out, or shutting down emotionally, appearing unavailable to their partner.

Communication breakdowns become commonplace, pushing couples into negative cycles. The emotional connection they crave fractures, leaving them isolated, unappreciated, and unloved.

What couples truly yearn for is closeness, yet their attempts at communication often miss the mark. Instead of saying, "I miss you, let's spend more time together; reassure me that you miss me too," they find themselves caught in a cycle of blame and withdrawal, hurting each other in the process.

It's crucial to send clear signals to your partner by discussing your needs and softer emotions. Rather than masking feelings with anger, share your vulnerabilities, express your needs, and discuss the emotions beneath the surface.

Emotional openness, gentleness, and responsiveness become the building blocks of trust, safety, and emotional connection between partners. Positive conversations pave the way to a profound emotional reconnection, rebuilding the bond that turns the ordinary into something akin to heaven on earth.
