Debunking Common Myths in Auto Repair: What Every Car Owner Should Know

Myth 1: You Must Service Your Car at a Dealership to Maintain the Warranty

A prevalent myth is that car owners must get their vehicle serviced at the dealership to keep the warranty valid. This is not true. As long as the service is performed according to the manufacturer’s specifications, you can have your car serviced at any qualified auto repair service without voiding the warranty.

Myth 2: Engine Oil Should Always Be Changed Every 3,000 Miles

While this was once good advice, advancements in engine technology and oil quality have extended this interval. Many modern vehicles can go 5,000 to 7,500 miles, and some even 10,000 miles between oil changes. Always check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer's recommendation.

Myth 3: Inflate Tires to the Pressure Shown on the Tire Sidewall

The pressure listed on the tire sidewall is the maximum pressure, not the recommended. For the correct tire pressure, refer to your vehicle’s owner's manual or the sticker on the driver's side door jamb.

Myth 4: Premium Fuel Boosts Performance in Any Car

Premium fuel doesn't necessarily boost performance in all cars. It’s only beneficial for engines designed for higher octane fuel. For most vehicles, using regular gasoline is perfectly fine unless your manual specifically says otherwise.

Myth 5: If Your Brake Fluid Is Low, Just Top It Off

If your brake fluid level is low, it’s often an indication of worn brake pads or a potential leak in the system. Simply topping it off can mask a more serious issue. It's best to have your brakes checked by a professional.
